See the quality (Inspect the cigar)

Squeeze the cigar gently. It should give a bit but not be too soft. Don't roll it in your fingers, as some suggest - this can damage the wrapper. Squeeze gently up and down the body to look for lumps or soft spots. A good cigar should have neither. Remember to be gentle.
Inspect the wrapper for discolorations, looseness, or cracks. The wrapper should be smooth and tight, and not damaged on either end.
Inspect the tobacco at the exposed end. Some variations of color are normal, as most cigars are made from a blend of tobaccos. What you're looking for is strange or abrupt color changes. This sometimes means an inferior leaf was used, or the leaves weren't laid together properly in the bunching process. Bad tastes and uneven burns will often be the result.

Of course, in choosing a cigar you want one which will satisfy your taste. Cigars can range from very mild to very strong. Also, they can be spicy, or flavored with such tastes as rum or vanilla. You may prefer a milder cigar during the day and a stronger one in the evening, or visa versa. Or you may find a strength that you wish to smoke at all times.
